Breed foxy chick: description + photo

One of the universal chicken crosses, intended for breeding by small farmers and on private farmsteads, was bred in Hungary and, despite the advertising of sellers, is still little known both in Ukraine and in Russia. However, the cross is very similar to the egg Red Bro and Loman Brown. Perhaps the chickens are just confused.

The foxy chickens, whose name literally means “fox chicken” or “chanterelle”, got their name not for their friendly relations with the fox, but for their feather color. The real color of these chickens is auburn, although it differs slightly from the most common brown egg crosses like Loman Brown. The photo shows a cross fox chic with a small amount of feathers of a different color.

After the delivery of the cross to Ukraine, these chickens received the additional names “Hungarian giant” and “red broiler”. The same names migrated to Russia. In general, there is very little cross breeding, so you should be very careful when buying chicks of this breed or hatching eggs. For example, it is impossible to say with certainty that foxy chickens or other "red" breeds are depicted in this photo.

Attempts by private traders to buy any thoroughbred poultry have shown that dealers are often engaged in selling chickens, who themselves have a poor understanding of who they sell. They just don't care.

Therefore, in order to have real foxy chic, you need to look for a proven breeding farm, possibly on the recommendations. Buying chickens from an ad with private hands is not worth it, since the foxy chik is a hybrid, the producer traditionally keeps parent breeds in secret, and the purebred breeding of this cross by private traders is impossible.

At best, they can sell a mix with red Orlington cocks or red Rhode Island. Chickens from chicken phoxics and these roosters are very similar to the cross, but they are inferior in terms of productive characteristics to the cross.

Foxy Chick. Pros and cons of this cross

And just like other chickens for private homes, foxy needs greenery.

A major advantage of foxy chick cross is 100% survival rate of hatched chickens. Of course, if you do not put a bucket of water directly on them. This foxy compares favorably with other breeds of chickens and chicken crosses. Especially from broilers who have a high mortality rate among chickens.

Important! The huge minus of the foxy is that they do not get along with other chickens and they need a separate space for keeping.

Foxy is a pretty absurd bird that fights even among themselves. When keeping a cross at home, you cannot leave more than one rooster in a flock. Even chickens are characterized by increased pugnacity. When content with other breeds, the foxy chickens simply slaughter "strangers", taking advantage of the size and weight advantage.

Foxy content

Cross undemanding to conditions of detention, but poorly adapted to the Russian cold weather. Of course, like all land birds, he does not like dampness and rain, so for the winter overnight stays and inclement weather in the fall and spring he needs shelter in the form of a barn. Chickens are afraid of drafts, so the barn should be without gaps.

When crowded chickens in the room they may be given eaters. As a prevention of infection by this parasite, chickens should put a box with sand or ash. And the ash in this case will be better.

The winter bedding should be deep enough so that the birds can "equip" there a recess in which to be warmer than in the barn. To insulate the shed, if the temperature in winter is not too low, it is not necessary. But, if possible, it is better to warm the room.

Necessary for this breed and perches, because, despite its considerable weight, the Hungarian giants fly well. This, by the way, must be taken into account when setting up paddocks for walking. It is better to make roosts at a height of 40 - 80 cm.

Breeding cross

The concept of "cross" already excludes the possibility of breeding, since the second generation will split into the original breed. Moreover, since the inheritance of genes of highly organized organisms is complex, the offspring will have an arbitrary mixture of traits of parental rocks. As a result, second-generation hybrids will be significantly inferior in their productive characteristics to the crossover fox chic.

Hatching and hatching chicks is not about the hens of any of the specially bred crosses. To get eggs, birds need to equip the breeding boxes, and chicks will have to be removed in an incubator.

It is possible to meet statements that foxy - quite good hens. In order to understand that these chickens have a hatching instinct that is completely or poorly developed, it is enough to check the productive characteristics. Not one hen that lays more than 200 eggs a year can be a good hen. She doesn’t have time for this, because she has to lay eggs and shed.

Attention! Molting in birds occurs after the end of the breeding season.

Thus, the hen blows 20-30 eggs, incubates them for 21 days, then begins to nestle and brood again, making 3 - 4 clutches per season, and "leaves" for molting, eventually laying down no more than 150 eggs per year. The second option: the chicken carries 300 eggs per year, leaving 2 months to molt. But in this case, it does not incubate.

It is possible to try to breed foxy with the help of an incubator if a rooster to them is planted not by a companion, but by Orlington or the genus of an island. In the first case, the offspring will retain their size, in the second, egg production.

Feeding young and adult birds

Adult birds are fed the same way as other chickens. Youngsters usually begin to feed with starter feed for broilers. Free access to fresh water is essential, as dry feed may get stuck in the esophagus.

You can also produce home-made high protein feeds by mixing boiled eggs, semolina, baker's yeast and green grass. You can also add dairy products.

Important! In no case should you give fresh milk, causing diarrhea in chickens. Only dairy products.

But keep in mind that all such homemade food quickly deteriorate. Moreover, they are made by eye and it is impossible to determine the content of trace elements and vitamins in such feed.

In contrast to homemade food, industrial food is made according to the instructions and there are fewer surprises with them.

Reviews of rare owners of the Hungarian giant

Cross foxy chick is not widespread in Russia and a little more in Ukraine. Nevertheless, there are those who acquired these chickens.

Andrey Simonenko, p. Mirolyubovka I took foxy chicks in an incubator that sells chickens to the public. I do not know where they get the egg from, they buy it in Hungary or they themselves are somehow bred, but the grown chickens matched the descriptions. True, the roosters were too large and hurt chickens, trying to trample them. Therefore, we quickly removed the rooster. Chickens also did not intend to breed. In the summer, roosters were taken away, in winter, when egg production decreased, and chickens were slaughtered. We live not far from the incubator, and than to feed non-rushing hens in the winter, it is easier to score them and buy new chickens in the spring. Dmitry Orekhov, p. Lower Katukhovka I want to say: "Citizens, beware of fakes!". Cross foxy chicks tried to take twice. The first time was led to the "cheap chickens" with it. Grew something more reddish. We still cannot understand what kind of breed it was and whether it was a breed at all. The second time, they did not make such a mistake and took it from an industrial incubator. These foxy chick very much. They really turned out to be very tenacious. Grew everything. On the advice of the forum, they tried to cross them with the genus Island. Crossbred chickens were bred, but so far too small to say something definite. In the incubator, we were told that such meat-egg crosses, like foxy chicks, would soon be supplanted by conventional broilers. I really don't know. Foxy slower grow broilers. True, and eat less per day.

Conclusion

Cross-foxy chick is a very convenient type of hybrid when it is maintained in a personal compound. But because of the growing popularity and the small number of genuine Hungarian giants, it is easy to buy a chicken of unknown origin, so you shouldn’t buy this cross through private ads on sites.
